Speed Over Safety? Rethinking the True Cost of India’s High-Speed Transport Corridors

As India rapidly expands its network of high-speed expressways and transport corridors, a growing debate is emerging: Are we prioritizing speed at the expense of safety? With ambitious infrastructure projects like the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and other fast corridors being touted as game-changers, experts and citizens alike are beginning to question whether enough attention is being paid to the lives and well-being of those using these ultra-fast roads.


The Allure of Speed: A Double-Edged Sword

There’s no denying that high-speed corridors symbolize progress. They reduce travel time dramatically, fuel regional economic growth, and support logistics efficiency by connecting cities, ports, and industrial hubs. Government officials proudly present these projects as the backbone of a “New India,” one that’s built for speed and smart mobility.

But beneath this glamorous narrative lies a harsher reality. As vehicles zoom across freshly paved lanes at breakneck speeds, accidents have become alarmingly frequent, raising serious concerns about design flaws, lack of enforcement, and weak emergency response systems. While speed may boost economic output, the human cost of unsafe engineering decisions often goes overlooked.


Engineering Gaps That Risk Lives

One of the core issues plaguing high-speed corridors is inadequate attention to road safety fundamentals. Several recent crash investigations have revealed critical issues like poor signage, insufficient barriers, abrupt merges, sharp curves without proper warning, and the lack of dedicated lanes for slower-moving or emergency vehicles.

Moreover, many expressways are designed with a ‘car-first’ mindset, ignoring the realities of local traffic, pedestrian crossings, and unauthorized entries by motorcycles or tractors—especially in semi-urban areas. These overlooked factors turn high-speed corridors into ticking time bombs.


Accidents on the Rise: A Sobering Statistic

India already holds the unfortunate title of having one of the highest road accident rates in the world, and the surge of expressway-related crashes is only amplifying this crisis. Data from recent years shows a disproportionate rise in fatal accidents on newly built high-speed roads, often due to over-speeding, fatigue, and poor visibility at night.

Experts argue that infrastructure is being developed at such a rapid pace that safety audits and long-term testing are either rushed or skipped entirely. Without robust planning for emergency exits, patrol teams, or trauma care facilities along these routes, even minor accidents can quickly become fatal.


Are Safety Protocols Being Bypassed?

In the race to complete infrastructure projects ahead of political deadlines, corners are often cut when it comes to safety compliance. Multiple reports suggest that contractors and developers prioritize completion speed and budget management over implementing crash barriers, rumble strips, or adaptive lighting in fog-prone areas.

Additionally, there is limited public awareness or education around using high-speed corridors. Drivers frequently underestimate the risks associated with driving at 120 kmph or higher, particularly without proper training, vehicle maintenance, or road discipline.


Solutions Exist—But Are They Being Implemented?

Countries with advanced road networks implement tech-driven safety solutions such as AI-based speed monitoring, intelligent traffic signals, and dedicated emergency lanes with rapid response teams. While India has begun experimenting with some of these technologies, their reach remains limited.

The solution doesn’t lie in scrapping fast corridors—it lies in building them smarter. That includes mandatory safety audits by independent bodies, transparent reporting of accident statistics, integration of road safety into the design stage, and ongoing training programs for drivers.


Balancing Progress with Protection

India’s ambition to modernize its infrastructure is commendable, but true progress cannot come at the cost of human lives. As expressways multiply and average travel speeds increase, authorities must urgently recalibrate their priorities—placing equal importance on speed and safety.

Building fast is not wrong. But building fast without foresight, without safety systems, and without preparing users for the responsibility that comes with speed—that’s where the real danger lies.
