World’s First Jeweler Nitin Vijay Gupta Conferred with PhD/Doctorate in Gems and Jewelry (Jewelry Doctor)
The third-generation Delhi jeweller behind Jewelounge, who has designed fine jewellery for more than three decades, received the doctorate from France’s Ecole Supérieure Robert de Sorbon at a convocation in Dubai at Armani, Burj Khalifa.

Nitin Vijay Gupta, the renowned jewellery and accessory designer behind the fine jewellery brand Jewelounge, has been awarded a Ph.D. (Philosophiae Doctor) in Gems and Jewellery by Ecole Supérieure Robert de Sorbon, a private higher education institution registered in France. The degree, dated 24 May 2025, was conferred at the Sorbon International Convocation in Dubai. Known in the trade as NV, he now goes by Dr. NV, and with this degree he becomes the world’s first jeweller to be conferred a Ph.D./Doctorate in Gems and Jewellery.
The degree was awarded on the basis of his vast knowledge and professional experience. Ecole Supérieure Robert de Sorbon awards its degrees through VAE (Validation des Acquis de l’Expérience), a French route that allows experienced professionals to earn a qualification for expertise built over a career. The certificate places the degree at UNESCO ISCED level 8, the doctoral level of the international education classification.
A Milestone With a Personal Story
For Dr. NV, the doctorate carries personal meaning. After the untimely death of his father, he took on responsibility for the family business at a young age and had to complete his graduation through correspondence studies while running it. Years later, that same hands-on experience became the basis of his doctorate received at Burj Khalifa reciprocating the towering stature and grit of his determination.

Dr. NV is a third-generation jeweller from the house of Guptasons Jewelers in Delhi, a family business with close to 100 years of heritage. He has designed fine jewellery since 1991 and today presents his work under Jewelounge, which offers bespoke fine jewellery in natural certified diamonds and hallmarked gold from its flagship studio on Golf Course Road, Gurugram.
In 2001, Gees, his designer jewellery label, unveiled the Kama Collection at the Grand Hyatt in New Delhi to raise funds for People for Animals, the animal welfare organisation led by union minister Smt. Maneka Gandhi. Later that year the collection travelled to Kolkata for Life is Beautiful, an exhibition and sale that his brand Gees co-hosted with The Faraway Tree, the candle house of actor Dimple Kapadia, in support of the same cause.
In 2011, he launched Picchiotti, a fine Italian jewellery collection, in New Delhi, where it was unveiled by the then Italian ambassador, Giacomo Sanfelice. The same year, he launched Crisscut diamonds from New York’s Christopher Designs at DLF Emporio in New Delhi, including the Crisscut Round, which has 121 facets compared with the 58 of a standard round diamond. In 2015 he opened the Jewelounge store at The Gallery on MG Road, New Delhi, designed like a lounge so that clients could choose jewellery in a setting closer to their own homes.
A member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI), he is known for jewellery inspired by the Mughal era, crafted with rare diamonds and precious gems, and for his Real Gold Couture and Accessories, one of several innovations he has introduced to the luxury and fashion space.
Recognition Over the Years
In 1999, the World Gold Council honoured his company Guptasons Jewellers with a Certificate of Appreciation for its craftsmanship at the Swarnanjali Awards, the Council’s awards for excellence in 22-carat gold jewellery design. NV started ornamenting women worldwide having high-profile clients and says his clientele has included members of royal families in the Middle East.
He has received several awards for creativity and entrepreneurship since the early 2000s. For 2015-16, he received the Saluting the Spirit of Entrepreneurship award from Optimal Media Solutions, a Times Group company, for creating Jewelounge as a designer jewellery brand, and was featured in its coffee table book. In 2022, he was named among the Top 50 Leaders of India at the Leaders Awards 2022, organised by Bizox Media Network at The Ashok, New Delhi.
